The bass drum, sometimes referred to as a kick drum is the large drum that makes the deep booming noise, right? The bass drum is used to produce the deep sound made to the beat of the music.

But if you’re into heavy rock or metal you will have seen (and heard) a double bass drum set being played. Although believe it or not, these kits actually have their roots in jazz back in the 1940′s!

Now double bass drum kits have either a single foot pedal, or two foot pedals connected by a bar. These operate the beater or as it is also known, a mallet. They can be used with one pedal, or with a set up that has one for each foot. Generally they are used by the right foot of the drummer.

The invention of the double pedal means that you do not need two bass drums, which means more versatility and less cost for the drummer. Not to mention that takes half as much space as having two drums on stage which makes them very popular with bands.

When you are learning to play the drums many people think they have to go out and buy an expensive drum set. That is really not true.

One great way to learn the drums is a electronic drum pad. These are great! They help you learn to play the drums without the large investment. This also makes it possible for you to try out the drums, and make sure it is something you really want to pursue. If you decide that you are just not cut out for the drums, then you are not left with a drum set in your living room.

The electronic drum pad is very similar to playing actual drums. It even simulates the feel of real drums. Most are topped with a rubber material to give you the bounce that comes with an actual drum. There are even drum pads that have a rattle incorporated to give you the true sound of a snare drum.

Another great thing about a drum pad is that is is easier to transport then an actual set. This means you can take them with you and practice whenever you get a free moment. Soon playing the drums will be easy as pie and who knows, you may even want to start your own band.

When you start taking drum lessons the first thing you will want is a drum set. Since you are just beginning it is a good idea to make sure you are in it for the long haul. Take a few lessons first to see if this is something you are going to continue.

When you do decide that you are ready to buy, look for cheap drum sets. That does not mean that you look for low quality, but look for low price. There is a big difference. Many people also sell brand name sets when they upgrade, so that is always an option when you are starting out.

The cheap drum sets are great for beginners. Make sure that all the components are sturdy and well made so they will not fall apart the first time you use them. Many of the brand name companies sell cheaper sets, but still do not scrimp on quality – they just come with fewer options. These sets are generally good for beginners because they can be upgraded and grow with you. The cheaper sets may not have the sound quality of the more expensive ones, but as a beginner, you are more concerned with learning to use the set than perfect tones.

When you are learning to play the drums it is not always possible to use an entire set. Not only would that be restrictive, but it might not always sit too well with the people around you either.

The solution to that problem is drum practice pads. They are so lightweight, and compact. The small size means that you can sit just about anywhere and practice. Pads make it possible to practice anytime you have a few moments. Not only are they convenient, they are also quiet.

If you use a metronome to help you learn rhythm you know how hard it can be to hear over actual drums. These pads allow you to hear the beats so that you know you are getting them right.

Drum practice pads are recommended by most instructors. They have the ability to let you hear where you need to work on your basics. The unforgiving action of the pads makes any mistake you are making come through loud and clear, making it possible for you to correct it before it becomes a problem.

The single pad also makes you focus on the fundamentals instead of getting distracted by the full set of drums. This will improve your technique and focus tremendously.

If you have friends that have taken, or are taking beginner drum lessons, ask them first.

And if friends do have a teacher also see if they are enjoying the classes. Although this is a learning experience, you still want to have a good time in the process.

If you are interested in online drum classes make sure that they are simple enough for you to follow along. There is no point in taking a class that leaves you confused at the end of the day.

The most important thing to remember if you are taking classes of any type of to make sure you are matched to the teacher. This means that you are able to learn from the style of a specific teacher.

Whether online or not, the way a person teaches has a lot to do with your ability to absorb the lesson. If you are a hands on person, then you will not do as well with drum teachers that use mostly written materials in the class. Checking with a few of the students who have already taken a class is also very helpful. That will give you an idea of how well the teacher is perceived by their students.

You will need to find a good place to purchase beginner drums. You may also rent them if you like instead of buying them outright.

There are also some very useful electronic drums that are easy to use. Or even just a set of drumsticks is a great way to get started. Then you are ready to practice no matter where you may be, the whole world is then your drum!

To get started fast you will need to know beats or rhythm of music. Practice by listening to music and tapping out the beats with your feet. If you have drum sticks you can also practice by using a table or chair to practice holding the drumsticks. Since getting the hang of rhythm is half the battle, you will be ready to play much sooner if you can master basic rhythm before taking lessons.

Another quick way to start playing beginner drums is to find a friend who already plays. Ask them if they will let you watch them play. This will help you get an idea of how to sit and hold your body while playing.

Although this may sound like a simple step, there are a few things you will need to know before you begin. First, what type of drums do you want to play. There are several types of drums. Two examples are the snare drum and the bongo drum. These both may be drums, but the way you play them is entirely different.

You will also need to decide if you are going to take lessons from someone in person, or if you would like to take lessons online. Both are entirely acceptable ways to learn to play drums, it just depends on your preference.

Usually beginner drum lessons will teach the basics. Drum beats, correct form and reading the music are usually incorporated into the lessons. Playing the drums takes coordination, so you also learn to use different parts of the body simultaneously. This in itself takes practice and coordination. But without the basics you will not have the skills to proceed with the harder lessons.

When you are learning to play any instrument it is important to build a good foundation. Then you can learn the harder lessons with confidence.
